Frank B. Holding Appointed to Golden LEAF Foundation Board

Rocky Mount, NC (January 22, 2004) - Frank B. Holding of Smithfield has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Golden LEAF Foundation. Holding is Executive Vice Chairman and Director of First Citizens Bank and Trust Company.

Golden LEAF administers half of the money received by the state of North Carolina from its settlement with cigarette manufacturers. It focuses on helping the state make the transition from a tobacco-based economy and creating new job opportunities in tobacco-dependent areas.

Holding, whose family has extensive farming operations, was appointed by Marc Basnight, President Pro Tempore of the North Carolina Senate, to fill the unexpired term of John Merritt, who recently resigned.

Holding was reared in Smithfield. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1952 and worked closely with his father, Robert P. Holding, at First Citizens Bank and Trust Company until his father's death. Holding was appointed to fill his father's unexpired term on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners and served for 37 years.

He is a Director of First Citizens Bank and Trust Company of South Carolina and a Director of Southern Bank and Trust Company. He also is a member of the boards of the North Carolina Transpark Foundation and the Johnston County Community Foundation.

Holding has received honorary degrees from Campbell University and Chowan College. Wake Forest University named him Outstanding Alumnus in 2003, and the State of South Carolina awarded him the Order of the Palmetto.

Holding is married to Ella Ann Lee Holding. They have five children.
