Golden LEAF News - August 2010

Greetings!

Good news is abounding in Golden LEAF statewide initiatives.

MCNC recently was awarded $75.75 million from the second round of the federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program for the Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative. The Golden LEAF Foundation provided $24 million in required matching funds. The $105 million project will provide 69, mostly rural NC counties, with high-speed broadband infrastructure. Read below to find out more about what counties will receive high-speed fiber or click here to read the press release.

Golden LEAF also recently earmarked funds for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) strategy. Some of our state’s fastest growing industries require a strong background in STEM skills, and fortunately, Golden LEAF is helping bolster these needs for the North Carolina’s developing workforce. Foundation staff are in the process of reviewing the STEM Initiative letters of inquiry (LOI). The LOIs for this special initiative are due today, September 7. Click here to access information on the Initiative.

Other exciting statewide initiatives supported by Golden LEAF funding are mentioned below: The Benefit Bank of North Carolina, 10% Campaign, and the Golden LEAF Opportunities for Work/ JobsNOW training programs.
