The Golden LEAF Foundation recently awarded 28 grants totaling just over $11.5 million to organizations across North Carolina. Four projects awarded under the economic catalyst cycle are expected to create over 700 jobs in tobacco-dependent, economically distressed and rural areas of the state. The Foundation also awarded over $4.7 million through its Community Assistance Initiative to organizations in Rockingham and Mitchell counties for projects that will support education, economic development, health care, agriculture, and infrastructure.
 
In this edition of Golden LEAF News, read about job creation grants in Surry, Halifax, and Franklin counties; the Golden LEAF Community Assistance Initiative in Mitchell and Rockingham counties; agricultural projects affecting the western and piedmont triad regions; workforce training projects in Beaufort County and western N.C.; and education projects in Rockingham and Alleghany Counties.

Pittsburgh Glass Works to open Elkin plant, bring 260 jobs

Pittsburgh Glass Works said today that it will open a manufacturing plant in Elkin to make automotive glass products. The company pledged it would bring 260 jobs to Elkin and make $85 million in capital investments. Local economic officials called it one of the largest economic-development projects in Surry County in decades. The county has been approved for a $2.04 million grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation toward buying equipment and machinery for the company.
 
34 jobs flying to Halifax County
WNCT
LSA America, Inc. will build a new production facility in Halifax County. The company is a manufacturer of light sport aircraft. 34 jobs will be created and the company will invest $400,000 over the next three years. Senator Ed Jones, of Enfield, credits partners such as Golden LEAF Foundation, One North Carolina Fund and other economic development partners as instrumental in attracting companies like LSA America, Inc.

Mitchell County Receives Over $2 Million from Golden LEAF

Golden LEAF, an organization that promotes the social welfare of North Carolina's citizens with funds for economic impact assistance to economically affected or tobacco-dependent regions, awarded Mitchell County over $2 million in grants to fund five projects through the Foundation’s Community Assistance Initiative. Mitchell County will receive funding for public sewer infrastructure, economic development, health care, and education. 
 
Rockingham County wins $2.7 million in grants

Rockingham County received nearly $2.7 million in grant funding for six projects through the Golden LEAF Community Assistance Initiative. Golden LEAF approved grants for six Rockingham County projects that include funding for 3,700 laptops for every ninth and tenth grader in the county school system, a sewer line extension from Eden to southern Virginia’s mega industrial park project and a healthcare clinic.

The Reidsville Area Foundation has approved giving $1,430,000 to Rockingham County Schools for their Mobile Learning Initiative. The Reidsville Area Foundation is a non-profit organization which funds eligible organizations within Rockingham County. The Mobile Learning Initiative was developed after the schools received $1 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation on April 8. With the additional money from the Reidsville Area Foundation, the schools will be able to move forward with a program designed to provide every student with access to a laptop computer.
 
New Canton livestock market thriving

The WNC Regional Livestock Center is booming. Three weeks after opening, the center has sold nearly 2,000 head of cattle, bolstered by a national dearth of beef cattle and high demand from American consumers. Sales are held every Monday. Golden LEAF awarded WNC Communities two grants totaling $600,000 to support the project.

Local farmer to be featured on Lowes Foods commercial

Local farmer Charles Boles will be featured in a new series of Lowes Foods' commercials. Boles helped get Pilot Mountain Pride up and running. Pilot Mountain Pride was started with grant funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation. It provides local farmers a setting where they can take their produce to get washed and graded and provides a way to have coop for marketing to larger businesses. Boles worked closely with Lowes Foods to get them to buy the locally-grown produce.
 
Western Carolina University to host summer construction program for high school students

Western Carolina University will offer high school students the chance to explore and get experience in the construction industry at the Kimmel School Construction Training Program in July.Program activities are designed to generate interest among Western North Carolina high school students in leading or becoming part of construction crews, and in related career and technology education programs. The free program will be held July 10-16 for male students and July 17-23 for female students. Golden LEAF Foundation awarded $37,000 to WCU’s Kimmel School for the program.
 
Durham firm gets piece of $40M fiber work

MCNC has awarded three contracts valued at $40 million to companies for the construction of 1,200 miles of high-speed fiber optics for the second phase of the expansion of the North Carolina Research and Education Network. The expansion, called the Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative, is expected to be completed by July 2013. The second phase was funded by a federal grant and $31.25 million in other funds, including $24 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation. Overall, the Initiative will culminate in more than 2,000 miles of new and acquired fiber outfitted through 69 counties in North Carolina.
 
School board approves budget proposal; accepts grant

Alleghany County Schools recently received a $325,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation to help the county's math and science teachers through the Foundation's Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Initiative. Golden LEAF Foundation President Dan Gerlach recently presented the board with a check honoring the $325,000 award. The Foundation is also currently working with the County on the Golden LEAF Community Assistance Initiative (CAI) program.
 
Board OKs contract for allied health

A new 30,600 square-foot building will be built on the eastern edge of the Beaufort County Community College campus to double the space available for the nursing and medical laboratory technology programs at BCCC. Golden LEAF has provided a grant to help equip a lab at the college that will provide simulated clinical experiences for nursing students. The availability of additional clinical experiences will allow the college to enhance the ability of students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the nursing program, increase the retention rate, and increase the number of nursing graduates by an average of ten per year over three years.

Global distribution company plans $3.75 million facility at Triangle North Franklin

U.S. Growers Direct (USGD), a commodities marketing and distribution company, plans to locate a new global distribution center at Triangle North Franklin business park in Louisburg. Initially, USGD plans to distribute flue-cured tobacco from growers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to its customers globally. The company will create 10-15 full-time and about 40 seasonal jobs. Eventually, the company expects to expand distribution to other products. Triangle North has received a Golden LEAF grant to support its industry recruitment marketing efforts.
