Sen. Tony Foriest and Rep. Bill Faison helped Golden LEAF officials present the checks. Distressed communities find aid through grant The Appalachian The Golden LEAF Foundation has provided a grant of $764,348 to provide Tier 1 counties with four master of public administration graduates. The graduates will be responsible for aiding the economic development of these communities. Group grapples over priorities Richmond County Daily Journal Pat Cabe, Golden LEAF’s Vice President of Programs/ Community Assistance and Outreach, explains the process of the Community Assistance Initiative. Richmond County citizens are in the process of narrowing down their priorities for a possible $2 million in funding. Statewide Benefits from Biofuels, Agriculture Among Highlighted Topics of Biotech 2009 Carolina Newswire Dan Gerlach, President of the Golden LEAF Foundation, joined Cheryl McMurry, president of Bent Creek Institute in Asheville; Steve Troxler, commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; and Eric Ward, Ph.D., CEO of Cropsolution, Inc. to discuss “Agricultural Biotechnology Can Grow Everywhere”. The panel was moderated by former Gov. Jim Hunt and Steven Burke Senior Vice President of corporate affairs with the Biotechnology Center Program markets local produce during winter Asheville Citizen Times Golden LEAF awarded Blue Ridge Food Ventures $75,000 to build new office and storage space for a wintertime local foods project. Local farmers will provide the food, which will be frozen and stored at Blue Ridge and then sold to local customers starting in December. NC LEAP Receives LEAF Gift NC Lawyer Online Golden LEAF awarded NC LEAP, a project of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation that provides free legal services to income eligible, low-wealth business owners, a $51,000 grant to support program operations in Tier 1 and Tier 2 counties. Home, Sweet Home: Early College High School Formally Dedicated Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to mark the opening of Hertford County High School, a project that received almost $1.4 million in Golden LEAF funding through its Community Assistance Initiative. Laptops Launch: “Wonderful change has come”The Daily Southerner Edgecombe County celebrated their 1:1 Laptop Initiative with state Rep. Joe Tolson, state Sen. Clark Jenkins, representatives from Golden LEAF and the NC 1:1 Laptop Initiative, as well as local officials and citizens. Golden LEAF provided the funding to help make laptops available for every high school student in Edgecombe County. Brad Broadwell: Sustainable agriculture growing The Herald-Sun Golden LEAF funds will assist 15 rural counties and serve over 16,000 farmers through funding a regional value-added shared use food and agricultural processing facility to serve central NC. Laptop Initiative – Hunt High School UNC – TV A series on NC Rising features the NC 1:1 Laptop Initiative at work at Hunt High School. Golden LEAF, the NC General Assembly, SAS Institute, Department of Public Instruction, New Schools Project and the Friday Institute are working to develop a strategic approach to technology-enabled learning in North Carolina public high schools.
