Community-Based Grantsmaking Initiative

Current Active Zone: Northeast Prosperity Zone

The Community-Based Grantsmaking Initiative (CBGI) is now active in the Northeast Regional Prosperity Zone. The Foundation will invite counties to apply to participate in the Initiative by Prosperity Zone. The Initiative is competitive, but all counties within a designated Prosperity Zone will have an opportunity to apply.

The counties in the Northeast Prosperity Zone are Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington.

The Initiative is designed to identify those projects that are ready for implementation and have the potential to have a significant beneficial effect. It is a focused process that culminates with grants targeted toward investments in the building blocks of economic growth. Grants are limited to projects that address economic development, agriculture, education, workforce development, infrastructure, and health care infrastructure. Grant awards will be typically limited to 1-3 projects per county and total no more than $1.5 million per county. (A match toward the project from the applicant or other funders helps to make an application more competitive.) Not all counties will have funded projects.

Each county manager serves as a key liaison of the process, and will select a slate of projects that the applicants will submit to Golden LEAF for consideration. However, projects do not have to be administered or implemented by county government. All counties in the invited region can submit a slate of projects to be reviewed; however, not all counties will be invited to submit full proposals for this Initiative, and not all submitted projects will be funded.

The Golden LEAF Foundation will be accepting Letters of Inquiry (LOI) for the Community-Based Grantsmaking Initiative submitted through our online application system in North Carolina’s Northeast Prosperity Zone until NOON on September 7, 2018. After County Managers determine which organizations will be selected to apply, the COUNTY MANAGERS will provide a link to the online application form to the selected organizations.

For more information on the Initiative, contact Mark Sorrells, Ted Lord or Dan Gerlach or by calling at 888-684-8404.
