Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
McDowell
Year:
2012
Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to McDowell Economic Development Association, Inc. for support for the Foothills Pilot Plant (FPP), a small scale USDA inspected poultry and rabbit processing facility in Marion, NC serving independent livestock growers. This support will allow the project to achieve long-term self-sufficiency. FPP opened for processing services in January 2012 and has served 51 different farms and processed more than 16,000 animals with an estimated economic value of more than $240,000. In 2013 the facility expects to process nearly 50,000 animals with an economic value of more than $720,000. The plant allows farms to dramatically expand production, generate additional income, and enter markets previously inaccessible due to lack of USDA inspection. Golden LEAF funds will be used for operating support and equipment.
