Amount:
$702,000.00
Program Area:
Community-Based Grants Initiative
County of Applicant:
Duplin
Year:
2016
Description:

This purpose of this grant is to provide funding to James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) to construct a paved practice area for a new truck driver training program. The program addresses an identified need for commercial truck drivers at a variety of companies in southeastern North Carolina, including food processing, agricultural, manufacturing, and construction businesses. Smithfield Hog Production Division alone employs over 400 drivers in Duplin County. The program will also complement JSCC’s new diesel mechanic program, allowing graduates of that program an opportunity to receive licensing needed to drive many of the vehicles they repair. Golden LEAF funds will be used for construction-related costs.
