Mattresses and Bedding for Pender County Children Affected by Hurricane Florence

Organization:
Pender County Schools
Amount:
$11,875.00
Program Area:
NC Hurricane Florence Relief Fund
County of Applicant:
Pender
Description:

The Pender County School system reports that more than 750 students within the county were displaced as a result of Hurricane Florence. As recovery continues, the Pender Early College PTA consulted with school counselors and nurses about students’ unmet needs and found many displaced students did not have mattresses. Students living in FEMA-issued travel trailers or staying with other relatives are often sleeping on the floor because of limited space. Additionally, some students may be using mattresses that are contaminated by mold caused by Hurricane Florence. The PECPTA identified a mattress product that can be rolled-up for storage but provides needed comfort for students. Students will be identified by school counselors in schools throughout the County. Funding awarded from the NC Hurricane Florence Relief Fund will be used to purchase mattresses and bedding.
