Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to Hertford County Public Schools (HCPS) for a two-year, middle school STEM project that will provide professional development for teachers and develop STEM career pathways. The project is expected to help students participate in career development activities and develop skills in demand by local employers such as Berry Plastics and Nucor Steel. In the first year, HCPS will focus on collaborative planning and design to identify skills needed by employers, improving academic performance, and professional development. The second year will focus on the enhancement of the STEM career pathways in middle schools and connections to high school and post-secondary opportunities. This project includes the creation of a learning lab that will bring an academic and career exploration foundation to all HCPS middle school students. The STEM curriculum will be developed in collaboration with local employers, the Region Q Workforce Development Board and the Chamber of Commerce. Golden LEAF funds will be used for STEM learning labs, professional development and field trips that enhance career exploration.
