Program Area:
Economic Catalyst Program
County of Applicant:
Robeson
Year:

Description:

The purpose of this grant is to fund the Town of St. Pauls to make upgrades to its wastewater system so that the system has the capacity to serve Sanderson Farms, which has announced its plans to locate a new chicken processing facility in the Town. The new Sanderson Farms plant will generate approximately 25,000 gallons of wastewater per day, which will place great stress on the Town’s current infrastructure creating the risk that the system may fail. Sanderson Farms will invest $98.6 million in its facility and create 1,000 new jobs in Robeson County by March 11, 2018. The new jobs will pay an average wage of $27,924, plus benefits, including 50% of the cost of employee-only health insurance. The unemployment rate in Robeson County was 8.2% in March 2015 compared to the state average of 5.4%. The total cost of the Town’s project-related infrastructure improvements will be $2.945 million.
