Sweet potatoes are considered a minor crop of great significance to farmers in North Carolina. This state is the leading supplier in the nation, producing 555 million pounds in 2000, worth an estimated $58.3 million to the growers. According to industry sources, sweet potatoes could have an even greater impact on North Carolina’s economy if more products were marketed in a better manner. The grant would be used for marketing research, product engineering, test marketing of new products, and planning for expanded processing capacity for new products.
