Job Description and Application

This job description outlines the objective, primary responsibilities and/or requirements, and qualifications of the External Affairs Intern.

Mission: Golden LEAF’s mission is to increase economic opportunity in North Carolina’s rural, economically distressed, and tobacco-dependent communities through leadership in grantmaking, collaboration, innovation, and stewardship as an independent and perpetual foundation.

Objective: The External Affairs Intern will be responsible for assisting the organization in the implementation of its External Affairs goals. This will be accomplished through supporting some of Golden LEAF’s outreach strategies in the External Affairs Division, which includes external affairs, communications, and scholarships.

Applications will be considered for one of two internship opportunities: External Affairs Internship or Scholarship Internship.

Aligned Majors and Areas of Study: Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, English, Policy, Nonprofit Studies, MPA, and other undergraduate/graduate programs in related areas.

Reports to: Communications and External Affairs Manager or Scholarship Program Manager

Internship Availability:

  • Fall 2024 – August 2024 to December 2024 (start/end date and weekly scheduling flexible)
  • Spring 2025 – January 2025 to April 2025 (start/end date and weekly scheduling flexible)

Requirements

  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student by credits at a North Carolina 4-year college or university or first semester graduate
  • Student’s permanent/ home address is a rural, economically distressed N.C. county
  • Availability 240-320 hours (not to exceed 30 hours per week, scheduling flexible) at $15 per hour
  • Ability to work at the Golden LEAF office in Rocky Mount, N.C. approximately 1-3 days per week

Primary Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Write original content for Golden LEAF website, newsletter, and/or social media.
  • Gather information for website, newsletter, and/or social media.
  • Assist in the creation of video and/or image content for website, newsletter, and/or social media.
  • Maintain and update databases.
  • Measure and report on results of outreach activities.
  • Support outreach planning and execution.
  • Learn new applications and how to update templates.
  • Take part in formal and informal training opportunities.
  • Participate in outreach brainstorming sessions.
  • Help prepare for and participate in events such as internship recruitment or scholarship gatherings.
  • Other duties as assigned aligned with goals of External Affairs division.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment
  • Interpersonal skills and follow-up skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, G Suite (Google Drive), and Outlook
  • Ability to learn other software programs and applications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interest in a career related to External Affairs duties
  • Classroom or job experience related to External Affairs duties
