Barbara Smith joined the Golden LEAF Foundation in June 2008 as a program officer. Her primary focus is on the Golden LEAF Scholarship and Golden LEAF Scholars Leadership programs. She evaluates grant proposals, supports the implementation of grant programs, and provides oversight for grant monitoring and compliance activities. Prior to coming to Golden LEAF, Barbara managed a TRIO program and served as program director of a Health Career Opportunity Program grant. She has an extensive background assisting first-generation college students and their families with navigating the postsecondary experience. Barbara is also a licensed professional counselor with over 15 years’ experience providing behavioral health and career, academic and personal counseling in both clinical and educational settings. She also has worked as a program director at St. Augustine’s College and a counselor at Edgecombe Community College.
Barbara earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from North Carolina Central University and her master’s in counselor education with a concentration in student development in higher education at NC State University. She is a national certified counselor and a licensed professional counselor. Born and raised in Tarboro, Barbara volunteers with Meals on Wheels of Rocky Mount and several other community organizations. She enjoys discussing fiction novels with her book club and trips with her family.
