Grants totaling just over $1.7 million were awarded by the Golden LEAF Foundation to help prepare the town’s industrial park site to be ready for potential industry recruitment. The grants provided critical infrastructure support to complete the project and ultimately resulted in more than 1,000 new jobs in a part of the state that consistently has a higher-than-average unemployment rate.
The chicken processing plant and hatchery provided key jobs for the region in one of the state’s leading and growing industries, agriculture. These jobs are important in a community that is rural, and otherwise has few resources to recruit industry.
St. Pauls Town Administrator J.R. Steigerwald said of the funding: “It would have been impossible to get the site up to snuff without the Golden LEAF grant.”
